The Prince of Wales, the future George IV of Great Britain, was a great connoisseur of cognac. He asked Hennessy to create a ‘very superior old pale’ eau de vie. Since then, the abbreviation VSOP — Very Superior Old Pale — has become a benchmark for the entire sector. The creation of the XO (eXtra Old) appellation was also initiated by Maurice Hennessy. Initially reserved for his family and friends, the XO appellation has become an international benchmark for cognacs.

The legendary ‘axe to the point’ refers to its founder Richard Hennessy, who became a French citizen after 12 years in the French army.
